HOLYOKE- John Brendan Kennedy passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 30, 2013 with his brother, Thomas by his side. "Jack" was born February 15, 1938 in Holyoke and remained a life-long resident. He taught Chemistry and Biology at Holyoke High School for 30 years and had been the asst. baseball coach for a time. He was much loved and respected by his students and was awarded many grants in Science. He graduated from Sacred Heart High in 1955, where he was an excellent basketball, baseball and football player. He attended Villanova University, where he played baseball, and was scouted by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jack later graduated from Assumption College, as class president, with a B.A. in Science. He then received his Master's Degree from Elms College. John was a lector and communicant of St. Jerome's and Holy Cross Churches. He was a CCD teacher and had done lay Apostolate work in Kansas City, MO. He co-founded, along with Dr. Abrams, the Medical Club, for students going into the medical field. He was Vice-President of Trinity Toastmasters. He was a member of the Holyoke YMCA and remained active his entire life as an avid runner and later, walker and hiker. John volunteered regularly at Kate's Kitchen in Holyoke and enjoyed singing, dancing, polka and Irish music. John is survived by his brother Thomas Kennedy, and sister Maureen Swierzewski and her husband Dr. Stanley Swierzewski, Sr, as well as 18 nieces and nephews, many great-nieces & great-nephews and many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Mary (O'Connor) Kennedy and his sisters Joan Drennan and Kathleen O'Sullivan. He will be deeply missed by all. The Funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:00am from Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St. Holyoke, followed by Mass in St. Jerome's Church, 169 Hampden St. at 10:00am. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kate's Kitchen, PO Box 6269, Holyoke, MA 01040.
