HOLYOKE: William R. "Bill" Flanagan, age 96, a lifelong resident of Holyoke, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017 at Jewish Geriatric Services Lifecare in Longmeadow. Bill was born in Holyoke on November 26, 1920, a son of the late William T. and Eva (Mahoney) Flanagan. A United States Army Veteran of World War II, he served in a heavy artillery battalion in England, Ireland, France and Germany rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After being discharged in February of 1946, he met and married the love of his life, Britt M. Swanson in February 1947. They remained devoted to each other until her death in November 2016. Bill joined the Holyoke Fire Department and rose through the ranks to become First Deputy Chief and later served as Acting Chief for two years, before retiring in February in 1981. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke for over 90 years. Bill is survived by his daughter, Gail Riemer and her husband Paul of North Falmouth, MA; his son, Bill of East Windsor, CT; four grandchildren, David (Sara) Riemer, Abigail (Sean) McCurdy, Keira (Jason) LeDoux and Taryn Flanagan (Nick); seven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, Britt, he was predeceased his brothers, Jack and Charles Flanagan and his daughter-in-law, Ann (Simard) Flanagan. He dedicated his life to his family and making their lives better. His energy, generosity and love will be sorely missed. Bill was loved by all and will be remembered for his contagious smile, kind words, and generous personality. The family would like to thank the staffs at JGS Lifecare, Landmark at Monastery Heights, VA Home Based Primary Care, Homewatch Care Givers, Spectrum Homehealth and Hospice Care, and all of our family, friends, and caregivers who have been so supportive during this difficult time. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 22nd at 1:00 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, followed by burial in St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held prior to the Mass on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Bill to the Holyoke Fireman's Aid Association, 600 High Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
