HOLYOKE: Robert J. Suchecki, 71, beloved husband, loving father and grandpa, and cherished brother, uncle and friend passed away on January 27, 2017, at Baystate Medical Center surrounded by the family he loved so deeply. Bob was born in Holyoke, MA to now deceased parents Felix and Wanda (Klosek) Suchecki. He was raised in the Willimansett section of Chicopee, attended Chicopee public schools and graduated from Chicopee High School in 1962. Bob excelled in baseball and played for the 1961, 62 State Championship Chicopee High baseball teams. Bob continued his academic and athletic career at American International College where he received a BA in Mathematics in 1966, and was a standout baseball player at one time holding four records. Bob then entered the field of education teaching mathematics and computer science in the Ludlow Public School system primarily at the high school level. Bob thoroughly enjoyed teaching and coaching JV baseball. He also had the honor of serving as senior class advisor and serving on several committees. While in the teaching profession, Bob took a number of mathematics and computer science courses sponsored by the National Science Foundation as well as advanced level courses in education receiving a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Westfield State College. Bob's favorite hobbies included bonsai cultivating, landscaping, water gardening, and also golf. Bob described his golf game as "average", but he played with the best of friends. In the spring of 1980, a friend and neighbor who knew that Bob was an avid gardener suggested Bob start a Farmers' Market in the City of Holyoke. During that summer the market was in full swing on Chestnut Street in downtown Holyoke. Bob managed the Farmers' Market for three years until turning it over to the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce. In the fall of 1980, Bob made a difficult decision to leave teaching and enter the health care profession. Although he had many opportunities to join large health care organizations out of the area, Bob considered himself fortunate to work with a number of high quality health care organizations within Western Massachusetts including a position of Manager of Blue Cross and Shield; Senior Vice- president of Health New England during its start-up days; Executive Director of Managed Care for the Sisters of Providence Health System; and CEO of Hampden County Physicians Associates until his retirement in 2011, when his health began to deteriorate. After retiring, he did, however, provide part-time consulting services for Baycare Health Partners and Valley Medical Group which he thoroughly enjoyed, but his desire was to spend his remaining years enjoying life with his family and dotting on his eight beautiful grandchildren: Nicholas, Noella, Elijah, Sebastian, Maya, Ava, Joshua and Adeline. Living and working locally allowed Bob to enjoy coaching Holyoke Youth soccer, basketball, and his love, baseball, which he continued to coach for twenty years. Bob considered his family his greatest joy. He leaves his wife of 46 years, Mary Ellen Spencer Suchecki, his three devoted sons Robb of Panama, Bryan(Kate Kennedy) and Luke(Colleen Norris) of Newburyport, his eight grandchildren, his brother Felix (Sheila Bresnahan) of Novi, Michigan, Paul of Springfield and his sister Carole(Edward) Hicks of Glastonbury, Ct., his brothers-in-law Thomas Spencer of Westminster, VT., and Dennis Spencer of Turners Falls, nieces and nephews and many wonderful and dedicated friends. Bob was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Susan (Sharpe) Suchecki. The Barry Farrell Funeral Home is handling all the arrangements. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at 10 A.M. at Saint Jerome's Church, 169 Hampden Street, Holyoke. There are no calling hours, and burial will be at the convenience of the family on Cape Cod. Bob's family is grateful for the excellent care he received at the D'Amour Cancer Center and Baystate Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, to honor Bob's memory, please make contributions to the D'Amour Cancer Center, 3350 Main Street, Springfield, MA, or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
