Rev. Matthew J. O'Connor, age 86, of Holyoke, a Priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield for over 60 years, passed into eternal life on Saturday December 24, 2016 at Holyoke Medical Center. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late Matthew and Mary (Kennedy) O'Connor, and was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Holyoke, St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, MD. He later received a Master of Arts Degree from Loyola/Mundelein University in Chicago in 1982. Father O'Connor was ordained on May 26, 1956 at Saint Michael's Cathedral in Springfield, and was first assigned to Holy Cross Parish in Springfield. He later began a long career as a teacher at Cathedral High School in Springfield, and was Director of Camp Holy Cross in Goshen for many years. Father O'Connor assisted at many area Parishes over the years and retired from active ministry in 2000. He is survived by one brother, John "Jack" O'Connor and his wife Juliann of Worcester; a sister-in-law Rosemary O'Connor of Agawam, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Father was predeceased by a sister, Mary T. O'Connor, and two brothers: Thomas and Dennis O'Connor. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10:30am in St. Jerome Church, 169 Hampden St. Holyoke, followed by burial in St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held in St. Patrick Chapel of St. Jerome Church on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00pm with a Vigil Prayer Service to be held at 6:30pm. Since the Church is fully decorated for the Christmas season, please OMIT flowers. Donations may be made to Catholic Relief Services, 228 West Lexington Street, Baltimore MD 21201-3413.
