HOLYOKE: John W. Curtin died peacefully at home on Monday March 6, 2017. Jack was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts on September 13, 1933, the son of Christopher and Alvena (Dufresne) Curtin. He was predeceased by his brother Rodger A. Curtin. Jack was a lifelong resident of Holyoke, having recently moved to South Hadley. Jack attended the Holyoke Public Schools, graduating from Holyoke High School in 1951. He went on to earn his degree in Education from Elms College and began his teaching career in the Granby (MA) Public Schools in 1961. During his 35 years in the Granby school system, he earned a Masters of Education from the University of Massachusetts and a Masters of Library Science from the University of Rhode Island. As an avid sports fan, Jack also enjoyed a part-time career as a sports writer for the Holyoke Transcript Telegram. During this time, he covered many sporting events including the Golden Gloves boxing tournament. Jack spent many years as a baseball umpire and a basketball referee, including serving as President of the Western Mass Baseball Umpires Association. Jack's love of baseball led him to serve on the Board of Directors of the Holyoke Youth Baseball League for more than 40 years. Jack is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise (Glesmann) Curtin. He leaves his children John E. Curtin of Bennington, VT, Michael Curtin and his wife Lisa of Holyoke, and Kathleen Bedard of Coventry, RI. He is survived by his sister-in-law Mary Jean Glesmann of Holyoke. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren Mary Margaret, Emily, Elizabeth, Caroline, Mary Catherine, Julia, Margaret and James who truly were his pride and joy. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9:00 from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of the Cross Parish Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Saint Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday, March 10th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Holyoke Youth Baseball League, P.O. Box 10453, Holyoke, MA 01040 or to Our Lady of the Cross Church, 23 Sycamore Street, Holyoke MA 01040.
