John H. Woods, 82, of Holyoke, died with his family by his side on Friday, January 13, 2017. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late James H. and Katherine (Mahoney) Woods, attended Holyoke Public Schools, and was a graduate of Holyoke High School, Class of 1952. He also graduated from Springfield College with a BS in Physical Education and from Fairfield University in CT with a Master's Degree in English. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War, attaining the rank of Private First Class as a military police officer. John started his career as a physical education teacher at the New Rochelle High School in NY and continued this profession at Kiley Junior High School in Springfield for 33 years where he also coached the football, wrestling and track teams before retiring. He also worked part time for many years at Mt. Tom Ski Area in Holyoke. John was an avid sports enthusiast who played over 20 years with the Tri-County Baseball League, was a member of the Peanut Bowl team with Holyoke High School in 1950, and a member of the Greater Springfield Harriers running club for over 20 years. He was a lifelong member of the Holyoke YMCA and a communicant of Our Lady of the Cross Parish in Holyoke. He was predeceased just six months ago by his wife of 54 years, Mary (McGrath) Woods. John is survived by his three sons: John H. Woods, Jr. and his wife Doreen of East Boston, James B. Woods and his wife Karen of Holyoke, and Thomas M. Woods and his wife Mary Beth of Stamford, CT; a daughter Mary Ryan Rousseau and her husband Michael of Holyoke; eight grandchildren: Michael, Katherine and Elizabeth Rousseau, Maggie, Catherine, Henry, Bradley and Grant Woods; his siblings: Bobbie Quirk, Katherine Burke, Susan Woods all of Holyoke, Richard Woods of New York City, and Paula Kaufman and her husband David of Weymouth; his sisters-in-law and brothers- in-law: Bonnie Woods of Holyoke, Edward and Rueith McGrath of Harwichport, C. Bradley and Ginger McGrath of Northampton, and Robert Walsh of Orlando, FL; and several nieces and nephews. John was also predeceased by his brother James "Pat" Woods in 2015. The funeral will be held Friday, January 20, 2017 from the Barry Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St. followed by a Mass in Our Lady of the Cross Church at 10:00am. Burial will be held in St. Bridgid's Cemetery, Easthampton. Calling hours will be held Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 4pm to 7pm.
