SOUTH HADLEY" George D. Washington, of South Hadley, passed away on Friday March 24, 2017 at the Holyoke Soldier's Home. George was born in Holyoke to the late Joseph and Beatrice Washington and lived in South Hadley for over 50 years. George is survived by his devoted wife Tricia of South Hadley; daughter Donna and her husband Richard Plummer of Ludlow; son Paul Washington of Chicopee; two granddaughters: Nicole Washington of Springfield and Brittany Washington of Chicopee; and one great-grandson, Isaac Sanchez. He also leaves behind one brother, Robert and his wife Zane Washington of Longmeadow; one sister, Joan Allen of Sun City Center, FL; one brother-in-law Daniel and his wife Pamela Donoghue of Willard, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved first wife Rosalie (Starzyk) and two sisters: Marjorie Roach and Phyllis Tynan. George was a U.S. Air Force Veteran proudly serving his country during the Korean War Conflict. He graduated from Holyoke High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Design Engineering. He was employed at Mead/Westvaco Envelope Division for 36 years, first as a draftsman and in later years as a troubleshooter travelling extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad. He previously worked at Gilbert and Barker in West Springfield. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Holyoke serving as head greeter, vestry member, trustee and on the building and grounds committee. George's love of family and his many friends made during his career and through his membership at St. Paul's Church were very important to him and always remained close in his heart. The funeral will be held Tuesday March 28 at 9:45am from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St. Holyoke followed by a funeral service in St. Paul's Church, 485 Appleton St. Holyoke, at 10:30am. Burial will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in South Hadley. Calling hours will take place Tuesday from 8:30am to 9:45am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's memory to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 485 Appleton Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
