David M. "Oakie" O'Connell, age 54, of Hatfield, died on Saturday, December 31, 2016. He was born on December 8, 1962 in Holyoke, son of the late Francis and Mary "Mae" (Moran) O'Connell. David was a graduate of Holyoke High School, Westfield State College and received his Master's Degree from Anna Maria College. He was a Sergeant with the Holyoke Police Department. David joined the department as a Reserve Police Officer on March 18, 1985 and began his full time career on April 18, 1986. Dave was promoted to Sergeant on January 11, 2004. He was a dedicated Law Enforcement Supervisor and a seasoned veteran who proudly served the community with honor and distinction for the past 31 years. He received many awards and commendations for heroism and valor that attest to his care and concern for the citizens of Holyoke. He was an active member of the Massachusetts Police Association, The Holyoke Police Relief Association, The Holyoke Police Athletic League, was a big supporter of the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club, a longtime member of the YMCA and participated in this year's Ride to Remember. Dave gave more of himself in so many ways; as a friend, a basketball fan and coach. He was defined by his deep devotion to his faith, family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary (Deleva) O'Connell, his cherished son, Joseph Francis "Joey" O'Connell; his siblings, Mary Britton and her husband Timothy of Holyoke, Francis O'Connell and wife Kim of Holyoke, and John O'Connell of Holyoke; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Mary Deleva of Holyoke, a brother-in-law Vincent James " Jimmy" Deleva of Stamford CT, as well as many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Dave also leaves his former sister-in-law, Ann Shea O'Connell of Amherst. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his aunt Rita Moran, and several cousins. Family and Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Cross Church, Sycamore St., Holyoke. Burial will follow in St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of The Cross Church. Since the Church is decorated for the Holiday season, please omit flowers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dave to the YMCA, 171 Pine Street, Holyoke, MA or Jericho (Bureau for Exceptional Children and Adults), P.O. Box 1039, Holyoke, MA 01041. The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
