Alden M. McClaflin, 86, of South Hadley, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at the Holyoke Health Care Center. He was born in Springfield, son of the late Moody and Helen (Monson) McClaflin and attended South Hadley High School. He lived most of his life in South Hadley, and was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War. Aldy was a retired shipper at Nonotuck Wire Company in South Hadley, and was also the former caretaker at South Hadley Falls Cemetery (Village Cemetery) in South Hadley. Aldy had also worked as a hall monitor at South Hadley High School for ten years. He was a communicant of Saint Patrick Parish, where he belonged to its' Men's Club. Aldy belonged to VFW Post 3104, the Military Order of Cooties, and Knights of Columbus Council 1721 of South Hadley. He also volunteered at Leeds Veterans Administration Hospital and the DAV in Ware. Alden was the widower of Evelyn M. (Brown) McClaflin, who predeceased him on May 24, 1987. He is survived by three children: Margaret "Peggy" Hogan and husband Gary of South Hadley, Heidi Moffatt of Greeley, CO and A. Michael McClaflin and girlfriend Erica Richard of Chicopee; six grandchildren: Adam Hogan, Ashley Feeney, Michele Moore, Jeremy McClaflin, Jessica Cummins, and Paul Moffatt; fourteen great grandchildren: Tyler, Andrew, Penelope, Jack, Ryan, Jayden, Aiden, Arianna, Shelby, Seth, Stacia, Sophie, Cooper and Harper; two brothers: Charles Allard and wife Joan of South Hadley, Gordon "Zeke" McClaflin and wife Phyllis of South Hadley, a son-in-law, Jeffrey Dufault of Wolcott NY, and many nieces and nephews. Alden was predeceased by a daughter, Evelyn Dufault, a brother, Raymond Allard, and a sister, Lois McClaflin. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 8:45 from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by a Mass in Saint Patrick Church, 30 Main Street, South Hadley at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Village Cemetery, South Hadley. Calling hours will be held Thursday, January 26th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to New England Hospice (Partners in Care), 190 Old Derby St. Suite 304, Hingham MA 02043.
